The same case weighs about a tenth more in tantalum than in 18‑karat rose gold, and more than twice what it would in steel.

The Case
Prized for its exceptional corrosion resistance, distinctive color, and substantial density, tantalum has a presence that is immediately apparent in the hand and on the wrist. Its beauty comes with considerable challenges. Machining and finishing a case to this standard require highly specialized expertise, meticulous control, and patience. These demands are a principal reason tantalum remains uncommon in fine watchmaking.
The Liberty 250 Tantalum is distinctly different from its rose gold counterpart. Its brushed case and black rhodium dial and movement form a composition of gray upon gray, with cool blue undertones, bright polished bevels, and warm metallic details visible beneath the openworked dial. The complementary tones draw attention to texture, depth, and the architecture of the mechanism. Sleek and contemporary, yet rich in traditional hand finishing, it speaks a design language uniquely our own. Handcrafted hands in thermally colored plum or blue provide the final accent.

Corrosion Resistance
Named for Tantalus
Tantalum resists aqua regia, the mixture of nitric and hydrochloric acid that dissolves gold, and nearly every other acid at ordinary temperatures. Anders Ekeberg, who discovered it in 1802, named it for Tantalus of Greek myth, who stood in water he could never drink: steeped in acid, the new metal would take none of it up.

An atom sits at each corner of a cube 0.33 nanometers on a side, and one more at its center. Soft and ductile, tantalum can be drawn into fine wire, and under a cutting tool it tends to gall, welding itself to the edge and tearing instead of cutting clean.
At 1776 Atelier, we understand that choosing a timepiece is deeply personal. As collectors ourselves, we appreciate the importance of trust, transparency, and confidence throughout the entire ownership experience.
We work closely with each client before production to confirm the details of their timepiece and ensure that every decision feels considered and personal.
Because our watches are produced in very limited quantities and are often made or configured specifically for each owner, we are unable to offer returns once an order has been completed.
Our commitment does not end at delivery. Every timepiece is supported by our two‑year warranty, and should a concern arise, we will listen carefully, evaluate the circumstances, and make every reasonable effort to reach a fair and appropriate resolution.
We stand behind every watch we create and remain personally available to support its care, service, and long‑term ownership.
